Visit the only active volcano in Europe’s mainland that dominates the bay of Naples! Mount Vesuvius is best known for its eruption in 79 A.D. that led to the burying and destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. It’s estimated that thousands of Romans lost their lives during the eruption while the volcano was turning the idyllic, overgrown landscape into sand and ashes within hours. This exact preserved and protected the vibrant city of Pompeii, situated at the volcano’s feet, until archaeologists unearthed this snapshot in time. The drive will take you up Mount Vesuvius to 1000 meters from where, if you wish, you can walk up to the crater and meet an authorized Alpine guide who will be at your disposal for any questions.
